A Note from Jon

Have you ever wondered why something was happening to you?  I have.  I remember this time when I was in Jr. High that I got a detention.  I sat there in the room thinking “why me?”  The answer to that was obvious:  If you throw wet toilet paper at cars, you are going to get detention.

I’m actually referring to those times when there isn’t anything that you did, and there isn’t anything that can be done.  Like when your parents get into a car accident and can’t take you to your friend’s house.  Maybe it’s a time where a friend of yours has done something really bad and you are worried about them.

There are plenty of times where issues seem to arise out of nowhere and impact our lives.  There is this guy in the Bible named Zacchaeus who had something unexpected happen to him.  He wanted to see Jesus so he climbed into a tree to get a look.  That’s it, just a peek.  He didn’t want to invite Jesus over.  He didn’t want to have his life changed.  He didn’t want to give money to the people he cheated.  He just wanted to look.

How do you think Zacchaeus felt when Jesus collided with his life that afternoon?  I think he probably felt a little like you and I do when something unusual pops up, a little frustrated, out of sorts, maybe even a little mad.

Now we know that while it may have been horrible at first, it actually turned out quite well for Zacchaeus in the end.  What appeared to be an accident, was really a planned incident.

“Why did this happen to me?”  That little statement says a lot about us.  One of the things that statement reveals is that we feel like life is a little random.  Bad things happen, and there is nothing we can do about it.

What if instead of looking at our situations like we are a victim, we looked at them from a different perspective.  Jesus planned on disrupting Zacchaeus life that day.  He planned to go to that spot and find Zacchaeus.  It wasn’t an accident.

Jesus is out looking for you too.  When bad things happen in our lives, we actually have the opportunity to invite Jesus into that situation with us.  We can talk to Him about it.  He’s constantly inviting himself over to talk because he wants to change our lives.  Those frustrating disruptions that keep popping up, Jesus knows that they are opportunities to run towards Him.

When it feels like there isn’t anything that can be done about yesterday, remember that today’s problems are the place that tomorrow begins.  If you want to be closer to Christ  tomorrow, invite Him over today.
