Child Dedication

As Family Pastor, I am very excited to encourage you in this commitment between God and your family. Our vision at Grace Chapel is to partner with you in creating an engaging environment where children can experience and express the Life of Jesus. As you make this promise to God, we want you to know that we are committed to walking this journey with you and to pray for you as we celebrate together this wonderful gift from God.

The dedication of your child is a significant event in the life of your family. The Bible tells us that godly parents dedicated their children to the Lord and His service. Hannah brought her child Samuel and dedicated him to God and to the service of His house (1 Samuel 1:28). Mary and Joseph did the same thing with Jesus, “when the time of their purification according to the Law of Moses had been completed, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord” (Luke 2:22).At Grace Chapel we believe the dedication of your child should express the following…

Declaration of God’s Gift
The Bible tells us that children are a gift from the Lord (Psalm 127:3). As believers, we are called to recognize that children belong first & foremost to God. God in His goodness blesses parents with the gift of children. Parents have the privilege of enjoying the gift but also an awesome responsibility of caring for & raising their children with Godly wisdom & guidance.

Vow to Parental Responsibility
By dedicating your child to God, you are declaring that you will endeavor to raise your child in a God-honoring way. Deuteronomy 6:5-7 commands parents to love the Lord and to impress that love upon their children. The duty of teaching children belongs to the parents. The church can provide some instruction in partnering with the parents, but it is the parents responsibility to seize teachable moments at home & be diligent in discipling their children. Parents must live by example in their own spiritual walk.

Many Christian traditions practice infant baptism. At Grace Chapel we offer baptism to those that are giving testimony to the new life that Jesus has given them. Child dedication however is about the commitment the parents are making to raise their children in a manner that is honoring to the Lord.

Below are a some questions to discuss as parents. They will help you consider how you will raise your child throughout his/her life in a God honoring way. Use them to help formulate a Statement of Commitment that will be read at the dedication.

  • Who in the church family is helping you develop Godly character in your child?
  • What steps are you taking or planning to take to become a family on mission?
  • What are you doing to have a Christ – centered home?
  • What are you doing personally?
  • What are you doing in your marriage?
  • What are you doing with your child?
  • What are you doing as a family?
  • What outcome are you seeking? (What would be considered a “win” if parenting goes well?)
